Phonometric Surveys and Noise Measurements

Our specialists for precise acoustic measurements.

Phonometric measurements are analyses aimed at determining the amount and intensity of noise, understood as the level of disturbance resulting from sounds of any kind. The degree of noise pollution can be influenced by human activities such as industrial plants, vehicle traffic, commercial activities or by electrical equipment or installations.

Excessive noise levels can have a negative impact on the quality of life of exposed persons and, in some cases, can lead to irreversible hearing damage. For this reason, a special study of the phenomenon and a series of corrective measures are required to keep noise emissions under control.

SIGE offers support at all stages of analysis through a wide range of services. The main ones are summarised below.

Main activities

Phonometric surveys - These are instrumental measurements carried out with the aim of quantifying the noise level to which workers are exposed on average. The analysis is carried out using instrumentation and methods that comply with current legislation. Once all the necessary measurements have been completed, a technical report is produced.

The applications of phonometric measurements are many. The data collected can be used for acoustic assessments, to evaluate the acoustic climate in an urban context, to assess the acoustic impact of an activity on the territory, to determine the maximum noise level from a noise source.

Noise impact assessment - The analysis aims to determine whether a work or infrastructure (e.g. a production site) complies with the noise emission and immission limits in the reference area and adjacent areas. Depending on the time at which the study is carried out, it is possible to distinguish between two types of analysis: the forecast assessment, carried out before the execution of the work that may generate noise emissions, and the noise impact assessment for already existing works.

Thanks to in-depth phonometric surveys carried out by specialised technicians, SIGE offers support in assessing the acoustic impact and, in the event of non-compliance with legal limits, can draw up an Acoustic Rehabilitation Plan, which brings together all the necessary actions to contain and limit noise emissions, protecting the exposed population.

Acoustic climate assessment - This is a necessary step in the construction of buildings. It consists of a technical document in which the noise conditions that characterise a given area are defined. By way of example, it is a mandatory assessment when planning the construction of a nursery school, school, hospital, retirement home or residential complex.

The objective of the analysis is to prevent the construction of buildings for human use in areas that are characterised by noise levels that are not compatible with the planned activities. Where the technical report shows non-compliance with the threshold levels laid down in the regulations, it will not be possible to proceed with construction. Noise remediation measures will then be necessary to allow noise emissions to be controlled.

Acoustic remediation and noise abatement - This is the document that identifies the measures required to abate excessive noise detected in a previous survey or estimated through an acoustic simulation. Once the different noise sources observed and their impact in terms of noise levels have been identified, the actions required to achieve a given noise abatement are defined.
