Waste Management

Careful waste management encourages sustainable disposal, for the protection of your health and the environment.

SIGE guides companies or organisations that produce, transport or dispose of waste, offering a wide range of services. In particular, we offer assistance for the correct application of current regulations through specific activities such as drawing up management procedures, verifying compliance with the law, carrying out audits, and correctly classifying and managing waste (both transport and disposal). We also offer assistance with the compilation of the MUD (Modello Unico di Dichiarazione Ambientale - Single Environmental Declaration Form) and the fulfilment of waste census systems (e.g. O.R.So).

Main activities

Waste Classification - Waste producers, according to European regulations (European Waste Code - EWC), are required to classify waste by assigning specific EWC codes, depending on the activity that produced the waste and with respect to its composition. This characterisation is functional to the disposal process, which varies considerably depending on the nature of the substances taken into consideration (municipal waste, special waste, hazardous waste, etc.).

Legislation requires different types of waste to be handled in different ways in order to protect both people and the environment. The inappropriate handling of a waste (transport, storage, disposal), in the absence of a correct EWC classification, can lead to serious penalties and be a criminal offence, as well as harming the health of people who come into contact with the waste.

A further aspect to be considered is the complexity of certain situations (e.g. construction waste or hospital waste) that require careful investigation to determine the nature of the waste in order to adopt the correct treatment measures according to current regulations. The classification process is crucial for the correct management of waste and for the conformity of the operating procedures adopted.

Completion of the MUD - The Single Environmental Declaration Form is one of the communications required by the waste legislation. The purpose of the document is to summarise how much and what waste is produced and to what extent it is treated for disposal or recovery. SIGE offers assistance in filling in the declaration, resolving any ambiguities concerning CER classification, the management of particular waste (e.g. sanitary waste, asbestos, electrical and electronic waste, etc.) and the correct way to submit the correct form in each case.

Some entities are obliged to submit, on an annual basis, the MUD declaration and choose to make use of SIGE's expertise in order to correctly compile the document, and to be certain of being compliant regarding waste production, avoiding errors and thus possible sanctions.

Audits and periodic verifications - SIGE supports companies in periodically verifying facilities, means and methods of waste treatment. These audits make it possible to intercept any non-compliance with the regulations and intervene with appropriate corrective actions. This type of investigation can be extremely useful for companies to prepare for the certification processes (managed by independent third-party bodies) and identify any relevant criticalities, finding solutions well in advance.

Choosing to adopt audit procedures means minimising the risk of non-compliance and outlining a range of actions aimed at ensuring the quality standards required to properly manage waste and safely carry out the treatment required by legislation.

Waste Management Plan - SIGE supports companies in the preparation of plans to optimise the management of all waste-related obligations. From planning storage and discharge management to waste sorting, from setting up material recovery actions to planning periodic audits and staff awareness campaigns.

Specialised training - We are also able to design and deliver specialised training that can be tailored to specific customer needs. The main areas are: applicable legislation, waste classification, end-of-waste, environmental authorisations, landfill regulations, shipments abroad, documentation requirements, record keeping, temporary storage management, supplier selection, excavated soil and rocks.

Expert opinions on waste transport vehicles - Companies wishing to register in the Register of Environmental Operators are required to certify the technical suitability of waste transport vehicles by means of an expert opinion. SIGE, after the necessary checks, carries out the expertise by collecting all the necessary data and certifying the suitability of the vehicle for one or more CER codes, based on the characteristics and condition of the vehicle. The certificate is not required for every vehicle in the fleet, but it is valid for all vehicles that share characteristics with the vehicle being assessed.
