Radioactivity Measurements and Radiation Protection Consultancy

Our experts committed to protecting you from the risk of radioactivity

The term 'radioactivity' indicates the presence of 'ionising radiation' whose exposure, even modest, can be considered a risk to human health and safety. Indeed, in any activity involving risks from ionising radiation, it is necessary to ensure an appropriate system of protection for exposed individuals in order to reduce the risks that may result.

Radioactivity can be present in all known environmental matrices and can originate:

  • Naturally: the main natural source of exposure to radioactivity for humans is 'Radon', a radioactive gas that can be found in soil. Workplaces with a high probability of finding Radon in large con-centrations are required to carry out annual measurements, and if the threshold value is ex-ceeded, remedial action is required.

  • Artificially: in this case, the radioactivity is created by man himself, which is particularly the case in the fields of nuclear energy, medical-diagnostics, industrial, war and scientific research.

SIGE is able to provide valuable support in the detection and measurement of both natural and artificial radioactive sources, carrying out both field and laboratory measurements. The study and prevention of the harmful effects of radiation on humans and the environment mainly involve three factors: distance from the radioactive source, exposure time and shielding.

Qualified radiation protection experts

The professional figure qualified to deal with radiation protection is the qualified Radiation Protection Expert, and can act and perform tasks with different degrees of qualification, depending on the hazard of the sources. The Radiation Protection Expert is required in several areas including: the health and industrial sectors, in the field of remediation, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal and, in general, where Radon gas detection is required.

The Radiation Protection Expert has the skills to perform measurements, verifications or assessments of a physical, technical or radiotoxicological nature. The objective of these actions is to check the proper functioning of protective equipment and to provide guidance to protect workers and populations from the harm caused by ionising radiation.

Its tasks include other actions such as:

  • Identifying and classifying risk zones
  • Setting up internal rules to protect and guarantee worker safety
  • Providing workers with personal safety equipment (e.g. dosimeters)
  • Measuring and monitoring radiation levels to which workers are exposed
  • Training staff on the risks to which they are exposed, passing on the safety rules to be followed and instructing them on how to behave in the event of an accident

Preparing hazard warnings and designing protective barriersThanks to the skills acquired and the instrumentation available, SIGE is able to offer support to any organisation that needs to use ionising radiation sources or has to carry out interventions in work environments where there is a risk of exposure to radiation. If you wish to acquire information on the service offered, please fill out the appropriate form on the contact page.

What we offer

With the support of a Qualified Expert we carry out surveys of:
  • RADON gas concentration measurements1 in living and working environments
  • Measures of radionuclide contamination (which may be present, for example, in ferrous ma-terials imported from abroad)
  • Radiant field measurements from ionising radiation
