During the last century, the use of asbestos in shipbuilding reached an all-time high due to its many properties. For example, it was used as thermal insulation, fireproofing and protection against moisture and noise. We can therefore find it in all areas of the ship in wall panels, ceilings, floors, sealants, insulation and cladding, and electrical cables.
Only later did its dangerousness come to light. In 2011, the International Maritime Organisation banned the use and installation of asbestos-containing materials on all ships.
